My name is Gigi Ackert. I am a model, certified personal trainer, bikini competitor, a scuba diver, skydiver, and a mother. I have a 22 year old son whom I adore.
I was born in Ambato, Ecuador where I lived and studied there for 26 years. I attained an associate’s degree in English as a Second Language at the Universidad Técnica de Ambato and I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at the elementary and middle school levels in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. In 2001, I came to the USA to learn about the American culture and to improve my English skills. In the United States, I decided to continue my education and in 2006, I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts, Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Spanish and Latin American Culture from Empire State College. In 2009, I obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree, from the aforementioned university.
I’m walking for NAMI-NYS to raise awareness and advocate for minority mental health. Stigma associated with mental health is a significant public health issue. It is important to give minorities information about mental health and make resources available to them as well.
As a National Gym Association certified personal trainer, medaled bikini competitor, sponsored athlete, and a trifecta Spartan athlete, I believe equally in the importance of physical health AND mental health and wellness. To keep my mental wellness, I enjoy meditating, visit a psychologist and a life coach one a month and I journal daily.
I also believe in the power of God and my Christian faith has allowed me to use the gifts I have been given to participate on events that bring awareness about different issues in society.
I am also a proud single mother who has raised a wonderful young man and I know how difficult it is to be both, mother and father, to be a role model, to provide and to be there for our children 24/7. Being also an immigrant and an ELL I know that many people do not have the information needed to address different needs in a new country; one of them is mental health resources. This is an amazing venue for me to be able to help the Spanish-speaking community in addressing some of these issues.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to help others, as faithful stewards of God’s Grace in its various forms.”
